The rise of SIM only deals
A new study by BillMonitor.com has shown that UK consumers waste billions of pounds every year on the wrong mobile phone contracts. Many of us could save money if our contracts were more flexible – allowing us to choose how much we wanted to spend each month rather than tying us into a fixed deal that won’t reflect changes in usage and circumstance.
Fortunately, demand among consumers for a better value and less wasteful mobile experience has led to a rise in a new kind of contract: SIM only. While some SIM only deals will tie you into a longer contract, the majority work on short term or 30-day rolling contracts that allow users to tailor their usage to their needs each month. The idea behind this new breed of contract is simple: all the flexibility and convenience of pay as you go, with many of the benefits associated with a traditional contract.
So what is a SIM only deal?
Essentially, it’s exactly that – a deal in which you are provided with a free SIM card but no expensive handset. If you are about to finish a contract and already have a handset with plenty of life in it, or if you’re keen to take advantage of a deal on a second-hand handset, then swapping a conventional contract for a SIM-only contract could be a good move. Because they don’t provide a handset, SIM only operators are able to offer deals at much better prices than their traditional counterparts – so your monthly cost will generally be far lower.
